In this tutorial, we'll explore how Theme Fonts work in your presentation. Theme Fonts are pre-decided pairs of fonts: one of these fonts isused for titles (known as the Theme Headings font), and other font is used for everything else (known as theThemeBody font). When you select any text in your PowerPoint presentation, and then access theFonts list within the Formatting toolbaryou'll notice the Theme Headings and Theme Body font that's allocated for the active Theme right at the top ofthe Fonts drop-down gallery, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 2, below.

You are not limited to use the default Theme Fonts set for your presentation. You can always scroll down the Fontsdrop-down list and select another font for any individual text object. However, doing so will override the active Theme of your presentation. Forthat matter, you are not even limited to the default Theme Fonts set associated with the active Theme applied to the presentation. There aremany readymade Theme Fonts sets available within PowerPoint 2011 that you can switch to. Follow these steps learn more:

  1. Create a new presentation and apply a Theme to it, or open an existing presentation which has aTheme applied. For this tutorial we have created a new presentationand applied the Inkwell Theme, as shown in Figure 3 below. You can apply any other Theme.

  3. Navigate to Themes tab of the Ribbon,and locate Theme Options group. Within the Theme Options group, click the Fonts button tobring up the Fonts drop-down gallery, as shown in Figure 4.

  5. Note that the highlighted Theme Fonts set is always the same name as the active Theme of the presentation. In this case,the Theme Fonts set active is Inkwell, as shown in Figure 4, above.
  6. Within the Fonts drop-down gallery choose any of the Theme Fonts sets. Figure 5 below shows adifferent Theme Font set called Median being selected. When you have decided which Theme Fonts set you prefer, click on thatTheme Fonts set to apply it to your presentation.

  8. This will change the Theme Font set for your presentation slides, as shown in Figure 7 (compare withFigure 3,above). Note that the overall Theme is not changed. The slide still sports the same layout, colors, effects, etc. It's just the fonts that havechanged.

  10. Now, select some text and access the Fonts drop-down list within theFormatting toolbar. You'll notice theTheme Headings and Theme Body fonts that are allocated for the active Theme right at the top of theFonts drop-down gallery are now changed, as shown highlighted in red withinFigure 8, below. Why Save a Theme?

We already showed you how you can save Themes from within Office 2008 applications. In this tutorial, we'll now show you howyou can do the same from within the various Office 2011 for Mac applications.In PowerPoint 2011, these built-in Themes can be found within theThemes tab of the Ribbon, as shown in Figure 1.

Customizing

You might want to customize the Theme in PowerPoint 2011 by changingthe Theme Colors, Theme Fonts,etc, or you may want to add newSlide Layouts. By the time you are done customizing any Theme, it may no longer look like its original state! That'sone good reason to save your original Theme file before you play with it.

Sharing

Or you may have customized the Theme file to perfection, and it's so nice now that you want to save it as a file thatyou can share with friends and colleagues.

You can just save your favorite Theme as a backup, so that it is safe.

Use it within Theme Builder

You might want to open a THMX file in Theme Builder toedit and fine-tune it to your requirements. Note that as of now, the Theme Builder application does not work on Macs. It's aWindows only program but any THMX files you edit or create within the program can be used in Mac versions of Microsoft Office aswell.

Remember: The Theme files are saved as (.THMX) files. While saving the file you can provide a new name andchoose a different destination folder. The saved Themes can be easilyapplied on any presentation.

How to Save Themes In PowerPoint

Follow these steps to save an active Theme as a THMX file:

  1. Open or create a new presentation in PowerPoint 2011. Even a single slide blank presentation will work. Just make sureyou apply the Theme which you want to save.
  2. Select the Themes tab ofthe Ribbon (referto Figure 1 above). You will find the Save Theme button withinthe Themes group, as shown in Figure 2.

  4. Click on the down-arrow (highlighted in red in Figure 3) tobring up a menu. Click on the Save Theme option as shown in Figure 3.

Themes can also be saved in Microsoft Word and Excel 2011 for Mac in the same way it is done in PowerPoint. Follow thesesteps to save the current Theme in Microsoft Word or Excel 2011:
